Barack Obama sat down with Bruce Springsteen for a series of far-reaching conversations that will feature Spotify as an original exclusive podcast – the newest entry in the company’s growing list of audio programs.
“Renegades: Born in the USA” is an eight-episode podcast in which the former President and The Boss, who have been friends for over a decade, are “in deep and insightful conversations,” according to Spotify. On the show, the duo discuss issues related to race, fatherhood, marriage, and the state of America.

Starting on Monday (February 22nd), the first two episodes of “Renegades” will be available exclusively from Spotify worldwide. For more information on the series, please visit the Higher Ground hub on Spotify at this link.
Spotify announced the Barack Obama / Springsteen podcast at its Stream On event on Monday.
Also at the Stream On event, the audio streamer announced a new multi-year partnership with Anthony and Joe Russo’s AGBO production company for exclusive podcast content from the makers of such films as Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: End Game. The company also unveiled a new Ava DuVernay podcast focused on social change and police brutality cases, based on the ARRAY Law Enforcement Accountability Project, launched after the murder of George Floyd.
Also at the Spotify event was Jim Lee, DC’s chief creative officer, who said the Warner Bros./DC deal with the company for original podcasts stories about characters such as Superman, Lois Lane, Wonder Woman, Joker, Catwoman, Katana, The Riddler and Batgirl and Harley Quinn. Executive producer David S. Goyer’s first podcast under the Batman Unburied corporate pact will be released on Spotify later this year.
The Obama / Springsteen series “Renegades” is the second original podcast for Spotify under the company’s exclusive deal with Barack and Michelle Obama’s Higher Ground. “The Michelle Obama Podcast” hit the streaming service last summer and, according to Spotify, had the biggest debut of any original to date. In the premiere, Barack was Michelle’s first guest.
Barack Obama and Springsteen first met on the campaign trail in 2008 and, according to Higher Ground, “have been deeply friends since then.” In the podcast “Renegades” they talk about their hometowns and role models, modern masculinity and the divided state of America today and about how we can all move forward together.
“On the surface, Bruce and I don’t have much in common,” says Barack Obama in the intro to the first episode. “But over the years we’ve found that we have a common sensibility – for work, for family, and for America.”
He continues, “In our own way, Bruce and I have made parallel journeys to understand this country that has given us both so much. Trying to record the stories of his people. Looking for a way to connect our individual searches for meaning, truth, and community with the greater American history. “
Meanwhile, Spotify announced a new season of Higher Grounds “Tell Them, I Am,” a collection of short stories by Muslim voices hosted by Pakistani-American podcaster Misha Euceph. During Ramadan, a new episode will premiere every weekday, illuminating the lives of 22 people from around the world.
In addition to its multi-year pact with Spotify, Higher Ground has an exclusive production agreement with Netflix for scripts, television series, children’s programs and documentaries. The company’s first release, American Factory, won a 2019 Documentary Oscar.
Separately, Springsteen was embroiled in controversy earlier this month over a report that he was arrested for DUI in November, which prompted Jeep to run its most recent Super Bowl ad with the singer on YouTube.
