LONDON (AP) – Prince Charles went to a London hospital on Saturday to visit his father, Prince Philip, who was admitted for “observation and rest” earlier in his week after his illness.

Charles arrived at King Edward VII’s private hospital by car that afternoon and stayed for about half an hour. The hospital’s website states that due to the coronavirus pandemic, visits are only permitted under “exceptional circumstances”.

The 99-year-old Philip was admitted to what was labeled a “precautionary measure” at Buckingham Palace on Tuesday on the advice of his doctor.

Queen Elizabeth II’s husband is expected to be staying for the entire weekend into next week.

Philip’s illness is not believed to be related to COVID-19. Both he and the Queen, 94, received their first dose of a vaccine against the coronavirus in early January.

Philip, who retired from the public service in 2017, rarely appears in public. Its last public event was a military ceremony at Buckingham Palace in July.

During the current UK coronavirus lockdown, Philip, also known as the Duke of Edinburgh, has been staying with the Queen at Windsor Castle, west of London, performing duties such as meeting dignitaries from afar.

The royal household plans to celebrate Philip’s 100th birthday on June 10, if lockdown restrictions allow.

Philip married then Princess Elizabeth in 1947 and is the longest serving royal consort in British history. He and the queen have four children, eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

The youngest great-grandchild, son of Princess Eugenie and her husband Jack Brooksbank, was born on February 9 and is called Augustus Philip Hawke Brooksbank. One of his middle names pays homage to the Duke of Edinburgh.
