Kim Kardashian files for divorce from Kanye West after nearly 7 years of marriage
Sources told PEOPLE in January that a divorce between the stars was “inevitable”.
Kanye West believes his controversial 2020 presidential campaign was the turning point in his marriage to Kim Kardashian.
The Keeping up with the Kardashians The 40-year-old star filed for divorce from the 43-year-old rapper on Friday after almost seven years of marriage. Amid the divorce news, West “texted people” and “talked things through,” a source told PEOPLE.
“He’s in this place, if only,” the source says. “‘If only I had, if only I hadn’t.’ He processes things. “

“He believes the presidential campaign was the straw that broke the camel’s back,” the source adds. “Before that there was hope. After that, there was none. It cost him his marriage.”
The couple’s marriage originally ended up in crisis last summer, at the height of West’s unpredictable behavior. His public outbursts began in July after he submitted his bid for President of the United States and revealed deeply personal details about his family and marriage on the campaign trail and on Twitter.

West made a number of bizarre and controversial comments during a long speech to a small crowd at his first July 19 campaign event in South Carolina. At one point, he burst into tears and revealed that he and Kardashian were considering an abortion when she became pregnant with their daughter North in 2012.
“Even if my wife wants to divorce me after that speech, she brought North into the world even if I didn’t want to,” he said. “She got up and protected the child.”
A source told PEOPLE at the time that Kardashian “was shocked that Kanye was talking about North at the rally” and she was “angry that he was sharing something so private”.

West’s unpredictable behavior continued this week as he tweeted and deleted a number of provocative statements, including claims that Kardashian and her mother Kris Jenner tried to “lock him up”. (From the claim, a source told PEOPLE at the time that Kardashian “had been trying to ask Kanye for help for weeks.”) West also claimed at the time that he had been trying to end his marriage since November 2018 when Kardashian broke up with Rapper Meek advised Mühle during a summit meeting on criminal justice reform.
His behavior prompted Kardashian to address her husband’s diagnosis of bipolar disorder in a rare public statement, asking fans for “sympathy” and acknowledging their “complicated and painful” situation.
Days after Kardashian made her statement, West publicly apologized to his wife on Twitter. A source told PEOPLE at the time that West was feeling “very bad”, adding, “It’s obvious that he still loves her.”

“It’s been a difficult month,” said a source for Kim Kardashian, whose marriage to Kanye West has an uncertain future
The couple, who married in 2014, then met again in Cody, Wyoming, and met again in person for the first time in weeks. Kardashian was seen crying in the car with her husband, and a source told PEOPLE that she was “very emotional and also exhausted about everything”.
Shortly afterwards they flew to the Dominican Republic with their children. A source told PEOPLE that “the focus” of the trip was on working on their marriage. After they returned to the US together, a source said they would “get along” and that they both appeared to be “much happier”.

In mid-August, West restored its Sunday Sunday service in Wyoming, and Kardashian assured fans that his team had “taken all precautions to ensure the health and safety of the choir” during the COVID-19 pandemic.
“Kim still seems focused on making her marriage work,” a source told PEOPLE at the time. “She’s pretty calm about her exact plans for the future, but at the moment she seems to be fine with Kanye living in Wyoming.”
Then, in September, West put himself back in the spotlight as he fired another round of disturbing tweets. A source told PEOPLE at the time that Kardashian was “back at the end of the rope”.

Even so, they appeared to be weathering the storm and West remained relatively unremarkable for the rest of 2020. West admitted defeat in the November election after gaining 60,000 votes in a dozen states. He also alluded to a possible campaign by 2024.
The first signs of renewed problems came in December when a source told PEOPLE that the two were still together despite leading very much “separated lives”.
In January, multiple sources confirmed to PEOPLE that Kardashian had worked with well-known divorce attorney Laura Wasser and was planning to apply for a divorce from West. Earlier this month, a source also said the stars had “completely” stopped going to marriage counseling.
“They just aren’t on the same page when it comes to their future as a family,” another insider told PEOPLE. “And Kim agrees.”

Earlier this week, a source told PEOPLE that West is “not doing well” while the couple split.
“He’s scared and very sad. He knows the marriage is over and that nothing can be done right now,” the source said on Wednesday. “He also knows what he’s losing in Kim.”
A source confirmed to PEOPLE Friday that Kardashian had filed for divorce from West and that things were amicable. According to the source, they agree on joint legal and physical custody of their daughters North (7½) and Chicago (3) and sons Saint (5) and Psalm (2), who will turn 2 in May. In addition, the source said neither denies the preparations, negotiations are advanced and nearing an agreement.
A source previously told PEOPLE that while Kardashian works toward her law degree and continues to fight for criminal justice reform, she wants to keep her focus on her children and career.
“Kim knows what she wants to do with her life,” said the source. “She wants to keep living in LA, creating the best life for the children and focusing on her work passions.”
