The videos that have appeared on user @ deeptomcruise’s account since February 25th are among the most convincing deepfakes ever.
Deepfakes use a form of artificial intelligence called deep learning to create images of fake events. It is synthetic media in which one person in an existing image or video is replaced by the likeness of another person so that people seem to have said something they did not say.

Photographer Lauren White commented on the videos. “Deep counterfeits are going to be incredibly good and taking over TikTok,” she said.
“Any public figure should only be there with a verified account – even if they don’t want to create content to help identify their fakes.”
Deepfakes have increasingly been used as a comic book effect in recent months. South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone deepfaked Donald Trump over his election loss last year, showing the former president sulking and reading a story about a reindeer.
And hundreds of complaints have been filed over a “deepfake” version of the Queen’s speech that aired on Christmas Day.
The speech included jokes about the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s move to the United States, as well as a reference to the Duke of York scandal and his connection to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
Deepfakes were described as the most dangerous form of artificial intelligence crime in a report from University College London.
“People today live a large part of their lives online, and their online activities can build and destroy reputations. Such an online environment, where data is owned and informed, is ideal for exploitation by AI-based criminal activities, ”said Dr. Matthew Caldwell, who wrote the study.
“Unlike many traditional crimes, digital crimes can be easily shared, replicated, and even sold so that criminal techniques can be marketed and crime served as a service. This means that criminals can potentially outsource the more difficult aspects of their AI-based crime. “
