The Double Jeopardy actress shattered her leg “in four places” when she tripped over a fallen tree while walking through a rainforest in Congo.
She was taken to a hospital in South Africa before being flown back to America, where she underwent surgery to repair the damage to her leg from the fall.
In an Instagram post about her 55-hour ordeal and its aftermath, Ashley said, “In an American hospital, I had to continue waiting for the tissue damage and swelling to subside. Eventually, I was qualified for the 8 hour surgery to repair the bones, decompress the bleeding nerve, and get the shards of bone out of the nerve. I am recovering from the operation now. “
Ashley, 52, added that her father, who received the Covid-19 vaccine, was able to fly to South Africa to be with her in her time of need and was a great support after the injury.
“I’m very grateful to all of the experts, including … my pop rubbing my foot to remind my foot, while still unable to move, that it is connected to my body,” she concluded. “I’m up and down already. Thank you for your care and kind words. Let us always remember those without insurance. Let us remember those who have choices. Let’s remember those who are lonely and fearful. “
