According to his agent, he died on Wednesday. Jean Diamond said in a statement: “The 80-year-old Ronald Pickup actor passed away peacefully yesterday after a long illness surrounded by his wife and family.
“He will be missed very much.”
His first major part came in 1964 when he appeared as a doctor in the Doctor Who episode The Tyrant Of France.

Pickup told PA News Agency in 2012 that his favorite role was playing the writer George Orwell in Crystal Spirit: Orwell On Jura, who told the story of how he wrote his acclaimed novel in 1984.
He also starred in the films The Mission and Prince Of Persia: The Sands of Time.
The actor remained active into later life and continued to play in well-known productions.
In 2016 he starred as Archbishop of Canterbury in the first series of the hit Netflix drama The Crown.
In 2017, Pickup starred alongside Gary Oldman as former Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain in Darkest Hour, who told the story of preparations for the outbreak of World War II.
Last year he starred in the horror film End Of Term.
